The APA roundup is back for 2023 and we're excited to explore a new location! The event is APA's main fundraising event for the association and relies heavily on volunteer work to make it happen. We could not do it without you!
Since 2013, hundreds of packrafters have made new friends and paddled new rivers at APA Roundups in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado. Roundup locations are chosen for their variety of accessible river sections, which allow both beginners and experts to find nearby outings that suit them.
Roundup registration for 2023 is reduced for APA Members. Consider joining APA to get discounted pricing!
WHAT'S INCLUDED
Registration includes four nights of camping, volunteer-led outings, a communal meal, a keynote speaker (TBD), a fundraising raffle and plenty of socializing opportunities with paddlers from across the country. Children five years old and younger attend for free.
Outings at the event are entirely volunteer-led. Paddlers can join different groups according to their ability level. Outings take place on sections of rivers with rapids up to class III. We do our best to have volunteer-led trips for everyone, but please remember that we only have as many trips as we have volunteers willing to lead. Be kind to your trip leader :) Outing groups will be organized at the event. Any packrafters wishing to run local sections that include rapids above class 3 can do so at their discretion outside of the APA sponsored event.
APA is once again partnering with Swiftwater Safety Institute to offer a REC I Swiftwater Training course as well as a Basic Packraft Paddling Skills course in the days leading up to the Roundup. More details below.
SCHEDULE AND CAMPING
For 2023, we're exploring a new location - the Trinity River in Northern California! The Trinity River hosts a variety of runs, from miles of lazy, meandering floats interspersed with class II rapids, to longer whitewater sections through gorges to hidden tributaries well worth exploring. An official schedule will be available as the event gets closer.
Check in starts the afternoon of Wednesday June 7 and the event officially starts the morning of June 8 and ends Sunday June 11. All participants will need to checkout from the campground on the morning of Sunday June 11.
SWIFTWATER RESCUE INSTRUCTION
APA is once again partnering with Swiftwater Safety Institute to offer a Swiftwater Rescue REC-I course as well as a Basic Packraft Paddling clinic June 6 & 7. Camping will take place at Pigeon Point Campground, and after the courses finish on the 7th, it will be time to check in to the Roundup campground!
REC-I Swiftwater Rescue Training: This is an entry level swiftwater rescue course designed for anyone who wants to
acquire knowledge essential for running whitewater rivers more safely. This course is geared specifically towards recreational river runners whose focus is primarily on gaining river rescue experience and a basic working knowledge of whitewater safety and rescue techniques. Cost $350 per person paid to SSI + $25 camping fee to APA.
Basic Packraft Paddling Clinic: A course designed to introduce essential packrafting knowledge to anyone who is
interested in running whitewater rivers in packrafts. This course focuses on basic paddling and river running skills—with the more specific focus of safely and successfully paddling packrafts on any river with class I-III- whitewater. Cost $375 per person paid to SSI + $25 camping fee to APA.
You can register for either course on the SSI website. A group campground at the roundup location has been reserved from June 5 -7 for course participants and will be paid to APA.
